Everybody should now go and say: "Next Time, Bring Your Sister, Ya
Hump!"
I don't know. Last night, when George said it and pissed off the
customer, I have second thoughts about saying sister and hump in the same
sentence.
But that's four months after the Bob Borden/candy store episode.
On the May 11, 1999 show, the phrase was spoken in this order:
Bob Borden, with clip from 1/13/99 (the Candy Store episode)
Kathleen Ankers
Fred Hayon (sp?) (LS intern)
George Clarke
So while the comment by Johan did refer to George Clarke, he was the
fourth among the staff to say the phrase, and it was all in reference
to what had transpired four months earlier on 1/13/99 with Bob Borden.
Here's more, from the Wahoo Gazette for 5/11/99:
NEXT TIME, BRING YOUR SISTER, YOU HUMP:
Dave introduced receptionist and former mail boy Bob Borden
who participated in "Next Time, Bring Your Sister, You Hump." We
placed Bob in a local eatery and attempted to give the commercial
enterprise a slogan. We came up with "Next Time, Bring Your Sister,
You Hump." Bob was working the counter at "The World of Nuts
and Ice Cream" on 53rd and 8th. When a customer approached the
counter, Bob would eventually say "Next time bring your sister, you
hump." Well, after a while, Bob met up with a burly customer who
did not take kindly to Bob's "slogan." Bob escaped by the skin of
his teeth and advised the writing staff he no longer desired to do
the "Next Time Bring Your Sister, You Hump" bit. Bob said "I was
scared and I didn't want to get beat up." Dave said he understood.
Dave explained we wanted to try it again and needed to find a
willing Late Show staff participant.
Scenic Designer Kathleen Ankers was selected, also known as
Peggy, The Foul Mouthed Librarian. Kathleen took the counter at
"Bagel Café" at 54th and Broadway. She delivered "Next time bring
your sister, you hump" to a bagel customer just off-screen who
sounded puzzled. "I don't have a sister." Kathleen back tracked,
saying "Never mind." The next guy stepped up to the counter and
asked, "Did I come at a bad time?"
Very funny. Some guy off the street, without prepping, without
coaching, without a team of writers behind him, comes off with the
funniest line of the night. He was just being a New Yorker.
Next up in "Next Time Bring Your Sister, You Hump" was Fred the
Intern. Fred's internship is about to run out and is looking for a job
in television. Fred, if I meet anyone in television, I'll let you
know.
Fred's journey in "Next Time Bring Your Sister, You Hump" was
uneventful. He had no customers while working the counter at the
Broadway Café on 54th and Broadway. I think we used Fred on the
show just to throw the intern a couple bucks.
Finishing off "Next Time Bring Your Sister, You Hump" was
building engineer George Clarke. George's main claim to fame
was his appearance some years ago in "George Clarke's Quest For
Corn." We sent George across the country to find the best corn on
the cob. It lasted a week and a half, probably 7 days longer than it
should have. For "Next Time Bring Your Sister, You Hump" George
was stationed at "Ferrara's Café," a coffee shop directly across the
street from the Ed Sullivan Theater. Big George was met with an
equally large customer. He did not appreciate George's "Next time
bring your sister, you hump" line at all. As George slowly slinked
back further and further behind the counter, the guy became more
and more aggressive. He left once but decided to come back and
give George a little more attitude. As soon as the guy left, George
stated "That's it, I'm done." George threw in his apron.
When this last guy left, it was up to me to get him to sign a release
form. I had to follow him half way down the block before he
allowed what I said to sink in. When he realized I was from the Late
Show and he just took part of a Candid Camera type practical
joke, he dropped his bag laughed and laughed. He came back at me
and explained what was going through his mind when George
called him a hump. The guy was very demonstrative in his
explanation, waving his arms, talking loudly, walking back and forth.
The rest of the crew on the shoot saw the guy's behavior and came
running to my safety. I informed them that the guy was OK and
would be only too willing to sign. He told us he was an actor and
was still in role. He's currently appearing in a production of "The
Anti-Hump."
With all the work that went in to this piece, my favorite part was
the music going into each tape roll.
