You know what's so frustrating about it? The spam is originating from
just two networks. It may even be a single spammer using two
servers/networks. (They're using Google Groups accounts to send the
spam, and they keep nymshifting in order to avoid killfiles.)
I'm really disappointed in Google right now.
This newsgroup survived Kansan, Torkington Bort, and "Yeah, Yessir, Si,
Oui". I should think it can deal with a few wholesale watches and replica
handbags.
Oh, I agree. I just think it would be smart of Google to quickly &
proactively pull the accounts of bulk commercial spammers. (The
'watches, shoes & replica handbags' spam is emanating from just two IP
blocks.)

But to report them, you have to open the post to click on more
options.  I thought opening the posts just encourages them to post
more as they see that their posts are being read.  On Google, it gives
you a countdown of how many people have read your posts.

Maybe...so if everybody opens them to report them...

So if you post via a Google Groups account, you can see how many 'hits'
(or page views) your individual posts get?

Anyway, it's all about *click-thrus* for the spammers.

In fact, these particular spammers are so prolific, they're probably
using some sort of bot or automated program.

Else they have a room full of people just posting over & over & over again.

I heard a BBC World Service documentary podcast, where they tracked
down spammers and how it worked, and how spammers made money.

The BBC reporter bought penis-enlargement pills from one of those
links, paid the 70 dollars with his credit card, and followed the
money trail. The thing that surprised me was that they actually did
sent him a bottle of pills, which he got tested and obviously turned
out to be worthless herbal junk.

Anyway, he traced the money through a number of third parties,
including the company in Idia that actually sends the pills (but who
don't send the spam), who all take a slice along the way, and through
various banks in countries all over the world. The trail lead to two
brothers in New Zealand, who turned out to be known spammers who are
are wanted in the US.

Here's the story, with a link to the audio / podcast at the bottom.
Worth a listen.

"There were orders from veterinarians and doctors," says Mr
McWilliams, author of Spam Kings, "... people who I think would be
sophisticated and unlikely to want to give out their credit card
number to a website that had no contact information".
