You know what's so frustrating about it? The spam is originating from
just two networks. It may even be a single spammer using two
servers/networks. (They're using Google Groups accounts to send the
spam, and they keep nymshifting in order to avoid killfiles.)
I'm really disappointed in Google right now.
This newsgroup survived Kansan, Torkington Bort, and "Yeah, Yessir, Si,
Oui". I should think it can deal with a few wholesale watches and replica
handbags.
Oh, I agree. I just think it would be smart of Google to quickly &
proactively pull the accounts of bulk commercial spammers. (The
'watches, shoes & replica handbags' spam is emanating from just two IP
blocks.)

But to report them, you have to open the post to click on more
options. I thought opening the posts just encourages them to post
more as they see that their posts are being read. On Google, it gives
you a countdown of how many people have read your posts.

Maybe...so if everybody opens them to report them...

So if you post via a Google Groups account, you can see how many 'hits' (or page views) your individual posts get?

Anyway, it's all about *click-thrus* for the spammers.

In fact, these particular spammers are so prolific, they're probably using some sort of bot or automated program.

Else they have a room full of people just posting over & over & over again.
