My mother's funeral is at 3 p.m. today. I'm bringing an umbrella
along, because I have a feeling it's gonna rain. Just wanted you to
know I'll be thinking of pi/pie to see me through this unhappy moment,
and thanks for pi and all the humor this afl group possesses. She died
after a very long illness and was very brave throughout it all. And
Dake's appearance on JEOPARDY was just about the last good time we
shared. Thanks, Dake. Pi/Pie/and all the rest will give me cheer and
support. You're all so smart. There is no "off position..." etc, etc.

Prayers and sympathy for you and your family.
Thanks, everybody. It worked. I felt supported at the graveside
service, and it was amazing. The first thing I saw was the name
"Shaffer" on a nearby headstone as I was taking my seat. (Not that I
want Paul to depart.) Then, I hear the phrase, "I'm just sayin'." The
clincher was when I couldn't shut off my cell phone and the funeral
director (a youngish man) turned it off in 2 seconds and said, "Now
it's in the off position." So I was surrounded by reminders of afl and
knew I was being thought of. Thanks for that. I hadn't remembered that
I'd written anecdotes about my mother till Rod unearthed that funny
comment she made about Pres. Bush. Thanks, Rod, for your
thoughtfulness. All of you are very sweet.
It was a perfect ceremony and went off without a hitch. Tears, of
course, and a great rabbi. The rain didn't start until exactly after
all were in their cars and on their way home after the funeral was
over. God is a great director, and the rain was light. Misty. I didn't
sing anything, though, but the rabbi and I said the 23 psalm on
alternate lines, like a duet. To our mutual surprise, it turns out
we're cousins. His mother was a Drell, and we're both happy. My sister
played a Hebrew song on a CD player (sung by Barbra Streisand) and it
worked well. So much for my funereal trip report. Thank you, Laura,
Pat, Anthony, Kate, Shirlee, Greg, Marilyn, Keith, Dake, Rod, James
and Donz, and Polar. You all really are wonderful.
I was with her at her bedside when she passed, so she didn't die alone
and unloved. There was a mosquito buzzing around her open mouth and I
ran to get a rolled up newspaper to swat it away. No, I didn't hit my
mother with it. The mosquito landed on the wall, and as I was closing
in on it, I looked at my mother, and she was gone. The nurse came in
and said, "I'm sorry," after checking with a stethoscope. So I didn't
see her last breath. The Lord does work in mysterious ways, even using
mosquitoes to divert when necessary. Btw, the mosquito disappeared
after I was surrounded by the Hospice staff, who were all hugs and
comfort. They're angels to do this every day. It isn't easy.
Love,
Sally
