well, ya know, that's probably not very accurate. All that stuff is
probably
"digitally" stored these days. What I really mean is a switch from
local
standard definition tv to network HDTV.

Anybody who's a cable subscriber has gotten their network signals
digitally for years in the form of direct digital feeds, regardless
of
whether they are a standard def or high-def customer. That's why all
this 2009 analog signal deadline will only affect people with some
form of antenna.


Depends on the cable company, and how the customer is viewing. Those
who
have the cable directly to their TV will be affected if/when the cable
company goes to all digital transmission.


Cable subscribers shifted away from analog transmissions once they
converted networks to fiber-optics and started offering the "triple
play," since digital transmissions take much less bandwidth than
analog.

Generally not anymore because the digital transmissions the TV systems
have been sending to cable operators for more than a year now in many
cases have already required a box. Besides, it's been ages since most
people got TV programming via a cable provider with a direct line in
to their TV sets. Cable companies have for years wanted to protect
their systems from piracy, wanted to offer pay-per-view, etc. and you
can't do any of that without a cable box.

I personally know a lot of people with cable still going directly to
their
TV. They've been in business long enough to know how to deal with piracy.

The only room that doesn't have cable running directly to my TV is my
living
room, where we just got digital and a DVR.




there ya go! I never cease to be amazed at what people *think* they know.
February 17, 2009 is going to be a disaster for that very reason.
IMO, even with the cable, if you're planning on keeping those analog TVs,
get a couple of the adapters while the FCC is subsidizing them.
