*anything* included on the CD to begin with, or was I basically
downloading the entire software package? I might have to write a
scathing letter to H&R Block, and/or use something else next year.

Wait a second. TaxCut is from H&R Block?

I've always just used the Web-based tools/e-file feature athttp://www.hrblock.com.

Maybe they've completely revamped their site since I last used it.

I'd go to www.irs.gov They have a list of free websites where you can
do you taxes. TurboTax isnt free.
Since I did direct depost, when the stimulus check comes out it in May
that will also be direct deposit.
