Hey, how's it goin'? At least it's Friday. Here we go ...
*DESK CHAT HIGHLIGHTS*
Because they're such a wonderful, delightful group, Dave wanders into the audience to play America's fastest-growing quiz sensation -- 'Know Your Current Events.' Dave: "You can touch me. All right? <<cheers>> Now wait a minute. <<continuing applause>> No licking."
Participant # 1: Ashley from Chicago. She's here with her boyfriend, Bob. She plays: 'Know Your Athletes Accused of Taking Steroids.'
Participant # 2: Mark, a banker from Charlotte, NC. How are things in the banking business? It depends on the bank. His bank is good. Mark is here with his wife. They're in town for a friend's wedding. He plays: 'Know Your Tainted Meat.'
Participant # 3: Kristin, a restaurant manager from Charlotte, NC. (Dave: "I mean, it's like the twilight zone.") What kind of a restaurant does she manage? A Mexican restaurant. Tex-Mex, actually. She's here with her boyfriend, Nick. What does he do? He's also a restaurant manager. She plays: 'Know Your Current Events.'
After the break, Dave tries his hand, so to speak, at a little 'hand shadow' art. He also took a call from Raul Castro. CBS News set it up. Apparently, the regime in Havana is becoming more PR savvy. (Raul: "Hi, everybody. It's me, Raul -- the brother of America's favorite commie. Remember, this Sunday, in Hollywood, Oscar is king." That's it? He's gone. It may have been a robo-call.) Also, we were paid a visit by Chris Elliott and Gerard Mulligan. Chris says he was thinking about the fact that in the last couple of months, he & Gerry have premiered a number of projects right there on the Show. Unfortunately, each of their previous projects has been canceled after about one episode. There was "Bionic Guy." It was canceled after the first *promo*. Then there was "Skink the Bounty Hunter." And who could forget, from just last week, "American Conquistadors?" Well, tonight Chris & Gerry are promoting a *brand-new* reality show, "Chris & Gerry's Kitchen Nightmares." Dave says it sounds a little like that Gordon Ramsay's 'Kitchen Nightmares' show. Is it similar to that show? Chris: "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about." Anyway, Chris & Gerry's 'Kitchen Nightmares' airs on CBS. They brought a clip. Actually, they brought the entire first episode. We take a look. Excellent. I think this one's a winner. So what are Chris & Gerry doing after tonight's Show? They're going over to Rachael Ray's to 'egg the standby line.'
*STEVE MARTIN*
The book is "Born Standing Up." I may just have to read it.
*RAYMOND CROWE*
His thing: he does 'hand shadow' performance art. I guess this was about what I expected.
*MISCELLANEOUS MEANDERING*
What's happenin', people? Do you already have a touch of the Oscar Fever?
Do people still read periodicals? I think, pound for pound, one of the best periodicals being published today is "New York" magazine.
Do you ever watch "Animal Precinct" on Animal Planet? Did you know that the ASPCA chapter in New York City operates a full-time law enforcement division? It's the only law enforcement entity in New York City solely dedicated to investigating animal cruelty & neglect. I think that's great.
Here's a thought. What if there were a (voluntary) cannon of ethics among the major media outlets in the US -- a cannon of ethics that stated, in part, that no media outlet shall publish the names, pictures or postmortem 'manifestos' of serial killers, 'spree' killers or other perpetrators of multiple murders-suicide?
Hmm, that's kind of a heady topic on which to end this 'Synopsis.' But that's all I got. Hey, do you enjoy parlor games? I'll try to think of some parlor games we could play later.
Have a good Friday, everyone.
Later ...
Brady
