Fire Forces Evacuation Of Ed Sullivan Theater
Air Conditioning Unit Catches Fire; One Injured
NEW YORK (CBS) -- A fire in an air conditioning unit forced the brief
evacuation of the historic Ed Sullivan Theater Building near New York
City's Times Square Wednesday.
One person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke
inhalation, authorities said.
The evacuation order was issued at about 10:00 a.m. and most workers
were back at their desks in less than an hour.
The building houses the CBS program "Late Show With David Letterman,"
as well as a number of offices, including those for Letterman's
production staff. The injured person was believed to be part of
Letterman's crew.
Officials with the show said Wednesday night's program, set to be
recorded during the afternoon, would not be affected. The scheduled
guests were Rebecca Romijn, Jimmy Walker and LeAnn Rimes.
The Ed Sullivan Theater, which opened in 1927, has been used by CBS
since 1936, first for radio programs. It was converted for television
broadcasting in 1950 and was designated "Studio 50," to which it is
still referred today.
It was home to "The Ed Sullivan Show" on Sunday nights from the early
1950s until the program left the air in 1971. On weekdays in the 1960s
and early '70s it was used to broadcast game shows, including "What's
My Line?," "To Tell the Truth," "Password" and, for a short time, "The
$10,000 Pyramid."
CBS, which had been leasing the building, purchased it when David
Letterman moved to the network from NBC in 1993.
In addition to Letterman's production offices, the building that rises
above the theater is home to the New York City Mayor's Office Of Film,
Theater & Broadcasting.
It also houses the CBS Television Stations Digital Media group, which
supplies infrastructure, hosting, advertising operations and some of
the content for wcbstv.com.
Maybe...glad it was minor
