I think her was more to it than that. I don't think anyone would have
been dumb enough to sell Oprah 100% ownership of her show and
production company for just a $1000. Don't forget they knew Oprah
would make AM Chicago more successful because she had already turned
People are Talking into the number one show in Baltimore which is why
they hired her to come to Chicago in the first place. They were
deseparate to find anyone who could stay on the air against Donahue
(as he consistently slaughtered the competition) and thought Oprah
might have a chance since her Baltimore show was beating Donahue in
Baltimore. Of course no one could have predicted she would do as well
as she did and for as long as she has. She was successful
IMMEDIATELY. AM Chicago went from last place in the ratings to first
place practically overnight. She was an instant celeb in Chicago.
The entire city knew who she was overnight. Soon the show was so
successful that they decided to take it national so the rest of the
country could get a chance to see this amazing woman. When she became
number one nationally too the money just started pouring in. Oprah
went on a spending rampage taking her entire 4 person staff on lavish
shopping sprees but even she could not blow all those multimillion
dollar cheques that just kept getting bigger and bigger. Within
months she was the richest woman on TV, later the richest woman in
entertainment, and is now the richest black person in the world.
