I completely disagree. I think jokes about the host (and/or sidekick)
are never out of line -- but they should be funny. This guy's
material wasn't. Based on the intro and the act, I got the feeling
the guy usually works a lot dirtier than he was allowed to get away
with on network TV. Whether he does or not, and whether that hampered
him, I don't know; but he was pretty bad.
