Charlie Rose asked Conan O'Brien about hosting the Oscars. Conan said it's a difficult gig for a TV comic because the live audience and home audience are different from your show. Stuff that works on your show just won't go over there. It becomes too hard to succeed and too easy to fail.

More than anything in 1995, Dave learned he's in a no-win situation hosting the Oscars. If he's been asked since then, it's a sign they need him (as a high profile host) more than he needs them (as a way to introduce his act to a bigger audience).
