Hey, how's it goin'? Here we go ...
Before going to the break, Dave spends some time talking about his son'sfirst day of school. Dave says it was traumatic for him (Dave). He
explains that he pretty much likes things to stay the same. He says he
likes the occasional excitement, but pretty much he likes things to stay
the same. Now the boy is starting school. He's out in the world. Dave
wonders what good can possibly come from *that*. The kid can't even
drive! So this was a traumatic event for Dave. He says Harry enjoyed it.
On his first day, Harry filled a bucket with sand. Dave, staring into
the camera: "80 grand." Dave shows a picture of little Harry from his
first day at school. Cute. So kids are starting school at 3 years old
nowadays? Wow.
At least Harry tells his parents about his day. I'd ask my kids what
they did, and they both always answered "nothing." At least Dave's
getting a bucket of sand for 80 grand. (Hey that rhymes!) Finally, I
found the only topic they'd share was "Who Got Time Out?" So we'd talk
about who got time out and the rest was a mystery. (Blake Evans surely
must be incarcerated by now...he spent every day on the time out chair
18 years ago.)
Kids are just the same no matter where they live. As soon as I pick him
up, my son eagerly relates which child had to move his/her name (a
classroom management technique), which one had to walk around the
blacktop (losing recess time), and most delightful of all, who had to
go to the Principal's Office! I sometimes can get a few more details
about his day at school by using the deliquency report as a hook and
asking what was going on in the classroom when that *other* child got
in trouble.
My son goes to public school now but spent three years in a Montessori
preschool. I guess everything costs less in Georgia because the tuition
(excluding afterschool daycare) was "only" about $6,000/year.
I'm zonking out by 11:35...my son now gets up at 6am for high school so
I get up at 5:15. I'm sure I saw Dave running out and starting the
monologue from this show, and last night I made it to the first
commercial break. (If I taped the shows, they'd just pile up and I'd
never have the time to watch them.) So until I figure out how to deal
with this, I'm glad for your synopsis and the wahoo. They're the next
best thing. Perhaps a nice double espresso at 10pm would help. You
watch....Dave'll bring back the mailbag and read my letter and I'll be
in a coma and miss it.
You have my sympathy, Foxy. I have to get up around 5:30, too. Many
nights I'm still awake to watch the Late Show "live," but I always tape
it just in case I fall asleep. Go ahead and try watching it on tape
before your body totally forgets how to sleep more than 5 hours. You
can watch the tape with a (white) cup of coffee right after your son
leaves for school and FF through all the commercials.
