No, it's a television show and the audience is there to watch the
production. They don't do live shows that don't air now, do they?

no, because it's FOR television, but it IS a "live" show.

Didn't you know the sheep would stampede?

He got it from Carson...it's a tradition....

Carson tapped. He drummed. He didn't violently pound on the thing with
a grimace on his face.

And, besides, one man's nervous tic doesn't make a talk show tradition.

...There are a few hundred people in the audience and millions
watching
on TV. It isn't efficient to reference something that happened in
the
warm-up, because millions are excluded for the sake of hundreds.

It's called backstory...some of the funniest moments in comedy happen
offstage....

What's the value if there's no context for the viewers? The show is for
the people at home, not the people in the theater.

not true! I had the honor of once being at a Tonight Show with Carson,
and
the thing that struck me the most was that he had a presence that did not
come across on TV. It occurred to me after the fact that the reason for
that
is that he's relating to the audience, NOT the camera. It IS a live show,
and the cameras are only there to witness it.

...Paul's ad libs are funnier than anything the writing staff is
coming
up with.

Sometimes, yes...other times they're a little feeble, but in either
case it probably comes off better because he's not *required* to be
funny...as together as Paul is, I don't know if he'd be able to
maintain consistently high quality for an hour a night, five nights a
week....

...Television is a visual medium. Sitting at the desk and reading
sheets of fun facts is lazy comedy.

So put the Grinder Girl behind him while he reads them...if you want
straight visual watch Tom and Jerry cartoons....

Ever just *listen* to an episode of Jeopardy?...I don't even remember
when Alex shaved off the mustache because that's how I was getting the
show in those days, and it still worked....r

Wow, talk about how far some people will reach for a lame
rationalization.
