He got it from Carson...it's a tradition....

Sometimes, yes...other times they're a little feeble, but in either
case it probably comes off better because he's not *required* to be
funny...as together as Paul is, I don't know if he'd be able to
maintain consistently high quality for an hour a night, five nights a
week....
...Television is a visual medium. Sitting at the desk and reading
sheets of fun facts is lazy comedy.
So put the Grinder Girl behind him while he reads them...if you want
straight visual watch Tom and Jerry cartoons....
Ever just *listen* to an episode of Jeopardy?...I don't even remember
when Alex shaved off the mustache because that's how I was getting the
show in those days, and it still worked....r
