Just as I was prepared to emerge from a 'Synopsis' hiatus, I didn't get
to watch all of last night's Show. My local CBS affiliate's newscast ran
long. They were covering a fire at a local business in which two
firefighters tragically died. The station had a crew at the scene,
providing live coverage.
This being a 'sweeps' month, they kept a live feed focused on the scene
as firefighters removed the bodies of their fallen comrades. Emergency
crews used a tarp to shield the bodies from view as they were being
loaded into waiting ambulances. That didn't stop the local news anchors
from providing Olympics-like sideline commentary.
Anchor # 1: "And now we see the gurney." Anchor # 2: "That's right, Jim.
We're gonna stay on this shot ... "
And they lingered and lingered and lingered on the scene. It all seemed
a bit macabre & exploitative. They finally went to the 'Late Show,' in
progress, in time for Matthew Fox's interview.
I'm not saying it wasn't news. I just question their motivation for
showing, live, the removal of the bodies and lingering at the scene long
after the facts had been reported.
How about if network TV stations stopped doing local news entirely?
That'd be my vote. Or at least cut it down to once a day (and not
right after prime time). It's too bad that people watch that stuff.
