There's no easier way to fill space in the entertainment section nowadays than by going to the well with late-night ratings non-news. The substance of this article could be conveyed thusly.
'Despite increased competition from cable, David Letterman and Jay Leno continue to do dominate the late-night landscape, averaging 4.1 and 5.6 million viewers, respectively, this season.'
Of course, that version wouldn't have taken up as many column inches.
