Ok, one more conversation from last night on Long Island, and that'll
wrap things up. I'm now in Florida, and planning on doing as little
havoc as I can. Mainly seeing some old friends since I lived here the
last 5 years.
"So guess where I went yesterday, Mom?"
"I don't know, Cavan, where?"
"To 67 Burtis Avenue (Oyster Bay) and I met the owners."
"You went to your grandparents' house?"
"Yep."
"What happened?"
"Well, I rang the bell and a lovely woman, about my age, named Kathy
answered the door. So I explained that I was the grandson of the
Gilson's and I had lived there a few years with my Mom after my parents
separated."
"Did you go inside?"
"Yes, she showed me around the place and I told her how the house used
to be. There had been a couple living there for a few years in between.
She explained what they had done with the place and it looks gorgeous.
They really fixed the place up (with her husband)."
"Did you tell her about the family?"
"Yes, I told her that you had moved there around 1946 and your parents
stayed until 1988, when they moved to Vero Beach, FL. She thought that
there were just 3 daughters, but I told her that it was you, your
sister Pat, sister Maureen, along with 2 boys, Jack and Tom."
"She must've liked hearing that."
"Yes, I think she liked knowing about the family that had lived there
all those years. I told her what Marge and Hugh were like. That a
typical evening, when he was retired, was him washing the dishes (along
with other chores) and my grandmother yelling out from the sofa that
she wanted a drink, or that she didn't like the tv station. And he'd
run out and do whatever she wanted."
"That's funny because it's true."
"Kathy said she sounded like a modern woman ahead of her time. I
laughed and said yes, yes she was."
"What else did you tell her."
"Well, I told her about how they were avid ballroom dancers and that
they would always be dancing around the house, with Nat King Cole
playing on the record player. I showed her where they put the record
player. That's a beautiful memory from when I was about 5: listening to
Mr. Cole and watching them dance."
"Yeah, I can picture it now."
"Anything else?"
"I told her how Ken was like a son to them, and that he helped them
move down to Florida. How they wouldn't have moved without his help.
That first he did as many repairs to the house as he could (they were
always ashamed of how the place looked), and then used his connections
as Chief of Police (in all legal ways that is) to find the right
professionals to set them up for the sale and the move to Vero Beach.
That he knew my grandfather had a temper, and that he told him if
they're any problems to call him instead of getting mad with anyone,
and he'd straighten things out. He told him that if he got out of hand,
he'd knock him down. Isn't that what happened?"
"Yes, and your grandfather laughed hysterically at that one. He got the
biggest kick out of Ken."
"Yeah, he was very lucky to have him. Ken allowed them to do what they
always wanted to do, move to Florida. And with my grandmother's health,
it was a much needed move."
"Yes. That's something that you did that. You're quite nostalgic these
days, huh?"
"Yes, all these places that brought back bad memories in the past now
give me comfort."
"That's great, Cavan. I'll see you at home in a bit."
