I paid school
taxes and my son got a great education at an excellent public
school--a good enough education for him to graduate from an Ivy

doing community service like Obama, he chose to work and earn gobs
of money. He's only been out of school two years and already, he's
bought a home.
My point is that *taxes*, mine and others, funded his ability to
get a
good education.

You'd be better off if you just paid for it yourself.

You just threw that out there because you couldn't think of anything
better to say. Come on...tell the truth.

I thought it was right on-topic, and it's something I feel very
strongly about. Taxes shouldn't fund his education if his parents
could afford it.

I have no children. I'm paying property taxes on two homes - most of
which goes to fund local education. I have plenty of neighbors at
both places who make more money than me and have 3 or more kids.

Now why on Earth should I have to subsidize an expense that they can
(and should) afford?

I suppose because the school is there for you should you decide to
have children. And it benefits our society to have an educated
population.

As far as societal benefit, I still believe education should be
compulsory.

And, should you decide to have children, you should incur their cost -
your neighbor shouldn't. Unless you can't - in which case you probably
shouldn't have one - but, if you do, then yes, I believe it should be
subsidized.

I do think that, below some income level, education should be
subsidized - at least for the first couple of kids.

Well, there you go. So how where would that subsidy come from--taxes?

Yes - much lower taxes.

My neighbor has six kids. The school district there spends on average
about $4000 per student. When they were all in school, that's $24K in
expenses he incurred.

Meanwhile, his property taxes were $3500 and mine were $4100. And he
and his wife probably make more than me.

Man, I'd kill for property taxes that low...

It certainly figured in where I chose to purchase my homes ...

Much of the town I moved from consists of huge $10M + estates which pay a
lot of taxes but which don't cost the town a lot. That makes taxes lower
for other homes.

The place I live now has lower residential property taxes because much of
the town is home to business which again, provides tax revenue without
costing so much.

Significant to note that both places have excellent schools.

Which you have to pay for. LOL.

My neighborhood is nice, but not a mega-hood. The funny thing about it is
that the district is drawn up so my neighborhood goes to the school in the
mega hood across the interstate while ten blocks down they go to a school
next to a trailer park. Don't think that wasn't a selling point. Now after
25 years of paying taxes with no kids in school, at least they're going to
an A school. All of that money and I could have sent them to a private
school.

Yes, I am starting to think the way you do on the public school issue...
