Oops! L.A. Times Increases Downloading Of Howard Stern's Show

February 3, 2006

Yesterday we told you about the Los Angeles Times' story on the
popularity of Howard Stern's Sirius show in the world of online piracy.
Apparently many people took notice, as the Times reports today that illegal
downloading of his show increased five times over in the past day, after
their story brought the issue to the masses' attention.

According to Mark Ishikawa, CEO of BayTSP, which monitors online
file-swapping, the number of Stern-related files quintupled overnight. He
describes the massive increase as "waking the sleeping giant." RIAA
Chairman/CEO Mitch Bainwol weighed in on the issue as well, telling the
Times, "Sirius, the music community and other property owners are in the
same boat. We want and deserve a fair return on our investment. When that
return is compromised, so too is the risk-taking necessary to bring new
content to fans."

Sirius has been attempting to end the online distribution of Stern's
program, and cease-and-desist letters have been sent out recently to Web
sites openly sharing pirated records of his show.

In other Stern news, he said on his show earlier this week that Kanye
West's new Rolling Stone cover looked familiar to him. Stern revealed that
he was slated to post as Jesus Christ for his first cover shoot for the
magazine, but publisher Jann Wenner nixed the idea at the time.
