Repubs/Conservatives Dems/Liberals - It's time to get honest

Since we have to "label" ourselves, and we have to pick a party in
order to vote, I guess I'm a Democrat and a liberal (probably more of a
libertarian). But, the truth is, I don't feel like a Democrat or a
Republican. I truly vote for the best person (or, sadly, the lessor of
two evils). And, I certainly have many conservative points of view to
go along with my liberal ones.

And I believe, even with all of the name-calling that goes on in this
Howard Stern group, I think (and hope) that many of us feel this way. I
can't imagine that many educated people could actually agree with EVERY
conservative agenda, or EVERY liberal one.

So, I've been thinking why modern day Dems and Repubs seem to have such
a great divide between them now... why it's so hard to admit that the
other party isn't all wrong, and why so many can truly say that they go
along with EVERY idea their party puts forth. It wasn't always this
way.

There was a time when there were two great parties, the Democrats and
the Republicans. The main reason to have two parties was simply to
allow the citizens to have at least 2 people to choose from at election
time. Other than that, I don't think there was such a separation
between the thought processes... both parties had one concern in
mind... The U.S.A and it's citizens.

I think the reason for this separation, and the name calling, and the
"I believe everything Bush says" / "I hate everything Bush says" is the
adoption of the Christian Right into the Republican party. It seems
that it's all about getting votes now... not taking care of our
country. Decisions are now made based on "how will this affect the
votes from this huge piece of the population, the Christians?"

If you look at most of the issues that separate us, ithe BIBLE is
involved. A perfect example of this was the Terry Schiavo case. Gay
rights is another. What other reason would you care what adults do in
the privacy of their homes exept that the bible tell you it's an
abhorance.

The Republican party has been hijacked by the Christian right, and they
can't/won't stop it because they want the votes. More time is put into
getting votes than actually taking care of the business of government.
This is not about conservatism and liberalism.... even if that is the
names used during arguments.
