But publication implies a profit motive. It's one thing to "publish"
this material as an amateur work, but I think you're opening a real
can of legal worms here. Who decides just how much "borrowing" is
acceptable?

Good question but it's the principle that's the point.

Most of us in here are hanging out for some decent stories about the
Potterverse and if someone can write decent stories using the same
characters... why not??

Maybe the life and times of Ollivander for example? They'd need to use
Diagon Alley as their backdrop and feature some of the cast drifting
in and out... but there is a huge backstory there that could be made
into an interesting story... especially his life *after* Voldemorts
defeat.

As it is these characters simply 'end' with Deathly Hallows.

At least Steph Meyer has published the short story about Bree Tanner
(a *very* minor character in the book!) - and more or less admitted
that after writing it she wishes she'd not killed her off so quickly!
