Salazar Slytherin may have held to the pureblood idea, but it's Godric
Gryffindor's hat, and not constrained by that requirement. You may
recall that it previously put Tom Riddle Jr., a half-blood, into
Slytherin.
Also Severus Snape (son of Eileen Prince) was a Half Blood... hence
the title "Half Blood Prince"... !! :)

Interestingly, it seems most purebloods are quite ambitious, as
Slytheirn apparently has the most (at least Harry's time there.) But
as always, Salazaar's desires weren't all put into the hat. His
ambitious nature was, but not his only purebloods philosophies.
