WRONG...I wonder how you garbled THAT out of the statement he
had on the back of the Authorized Edition (from Ballantine):

"This paperback edition, and no other, has been published with
my consent and co-operation.Those who approve of courtesy
(at least) to living authors will purchase it,and no other."

(This was continued for a period after his death,in smaller
print, but he clearly regarded his being alive as a reason one
should not purchase the Ace edition [Ace had taken advantage
of a copyright-law loophole and rushed into print before
offering him royalties,NOT the way proper publishing is done]).

I just verified this checking my Hobbit and TLotR paperbacks from 1966.

I didn't "garbled" the information from the forward. I worked in a bookstore in 1973 and I remember when the *authorized* paperback edition came out. The information came direct from the publisher in 1973.

I think we sold more LOTR books than all other books put together fir a few days.

Ace at least thought they had a loophole and published the paperbacks without giving Tolkien ANY royalties. Eventually Ace gave into pressure and gave Tolkien royalties [not much] and promised not to reprint. Sorry I don't consider the Ace paperback an "authorized edition".
