I get the overall impression from the HP series that the frequent use
of "heavy" or powerful magic has a long-term side effect of
destabilising a person's psyche. Barty Crouch senior was, I think, an
example of this. The more "powerful" or destructive the magic, the more
pronounced this effect seems to be.


I'm not sure Barty Crouch Snr used powerful or destructive magic - my impression from what we saw of him was that he was more a manager at the MoM more than a practitioner, though given his circumstances and not being able to go into work in person, I suppose that could be an atypical period in his career!

But you don't hear of him using magic earlier like you do Aurors like MadEye. Then again, MadEye would be another example of someone who uses powerful magic but is pretty unstable!

However, this is correlation not causality: perhaps the reason they can do more powerful or destructive magic is because they're unstable to start with?
