OTOH, he also might help to those who have potential but no chances to
develop this potential due to, for example, lack of contacts.
So the question is, did he do it so he could benefit, or did he really
want others to join him in benefiting. You help me, I help you by
helping you make contacts for later in life. We all win.
He wasn't out for personal advancement tho. Ok he accepted free
tickets to Quidditch matches and the odd box of crystallized pineapple
from students who remembered him with affection... so it helped boost
his ego, but nothing more!
The students he introduced to contacts were people who had the sort of
abilities those people wanted so yes he short circuited the system but
in a relatively good way.
I don't recall *any* of the names of those mentioned as ex-slug-club
members being Death Eaters for example!!
Welshdog
Erm, Tom Riddle?!! As in the false memory Sluggy gave to Dd and where Tom
had to get the true one.
The memory also suggested Riddle was "friends" with some of the other Slug
Club members there with him at the time in which case they probably turned
out as DEs as well, although I might be reading more into the description
(deferential, or something similar).

Well, is Tom a DE? Or is he a Dark Lord, who "employs" DE's to do his
dirty work?
Well I always see Tom/Voldy as a DE but you're right, that might just be his lieutenants, and he's above or senior to that.
As for other members of the Slug Club, no need to assume that just because some of the other boys looked to Tom as their leader, even though he wasn't the oldest, they were therefore DEs, we have reasonable proof - HBH, p585 (UK ed.):
"Good gracious, is that the time already?" [said Slughorn.] "You'd better get going, boys, or we'll all be in trouble. Lestrange, I want your essay by tomorrow or it's detention. Same goes for you, Avery."
So in answer to your question Welshdog, we have Lestrange and Avery, two known DEs, named at what seems to be a Slug Club gathering :)
Curiously, it's all male, no girls mentioned - were the DEs also misogynistic? (A juicy topic for a dissertation there, I think, if it hasn't been done to death already!)
