He wasn't out for personal advancement tho. Ok he accepted free
tickets to Quidditch matches and the odd box of crystallized pineapple
from students who remembered him with affection... so it helped boost
his ego, but nothing more!
The students he introduced to contacts were people who had the sort of
abilities those people wanted so yes he short circuited the system but
in a relatively good way.
I don't recall *any* of the names of those mentioned as ex-slug-club
members being Death Eaters for example!!

I agree about the ego part. He probably might have liked to say "I know [famous wizard], I helped him/her to get his/her job!".
