I don't think Hermione dated Krum in GoF *merely* because he was an
international Quidditch star. The fact was that he *was* the one who
asked her for the Yule Ball when no one else bothered to do so.

Who knows what would have happened if Hermione had progressed with Krum.
Sure, he does imply in DH that he uses his fame to get dates, but he
seemed quite sincere with Hermione. And we only ever see him with one
date, so we can't jump to a quick judgement.
