BTW, Voldemort is described by Dumbledore at several points in the story
as being one of the most magically gifted and talented wizard ever. I
wonder why he could not recreate the Philosopher's Stone to achieve
immortality? Seems safer and less "destructive" than ripping your soul
into Horcruxes.

Far easier to destroy the Stone than a Horcrux. The Stone would need
to be hidden but easily accessed for continued use. A Horcrux can be
left alone for decades.

Isn't this explained by Dd (presumably in HBP after explaining about
horcruxes to Harry but I don't precisely recall) - Voldy wouldn't want to be
dependent on anyone, or anything, even an inanimate object like a stone. He
went after the PS out of desperation but it wouldn't be his first choice -
that had to be a horcrux (or series of them) to give him independence.

Although in fact, that's still being dependent on an object, just a
magically-created horcrux rather than a magically-created PS...

Well, like I said, far easier to destroy the Stone than Horcrux. if
one must be dependant on an object to live forever, better an nearly
indestructible horcrux than a Stone. I'm sure DD found it quite easy
to destroy Nicholas'.
