I think he actually never cared for Snape as long as he worked for him, and I mean truly cared about him and help him to change. As long as he takes care of Harry, he has no problem at all and while he can manipulate him because he knew his secrets, he knew he wouldn't leave. But not only Snape, he was manipulative with everybody else in many ways.
