Of course, Rowling has been baffling us with twists and turns the
whole series long... plotline-wise; but teenage romantic
relationships were never a big theme of these books, except for HBP,
where they were instrumental in showing some kind of emontional
growth and normality in Harry and the others (and also as a fill-in,
of course).

I think it was overdone in HBP. Almost as if Rowling felt the need to
make up for perceived paucity of romance in the earlier books.
Particularly the Ron and Lavender scenes were a bit overdone, IMO.

I tend to agree that the romance in HBP was overdone but I think Jo
might have felt the need to do it that way to make the point
exceedingly clear to the more ... fanatical (some might have called
them delusional) shippers.

Well she only succeeded in further convincing these "delusional"
shippers how unsuitable a match Ron is for Hermione. :)

True, since by that stage they were never going to be convinced otherwise
anyway I would have preferred if Jo had just disregarded their flights of
fancy (or should that be fantasy) and concentrated on the book she was
writing.
