Is this some pompous editors correction? Is that how both the US and
UK editions printed it? Surely the more easy colloquial expression is
"stench ... in the air" and not "upon the air". What do you think is
the most likely usage that you would use in everyday parlance?

It sounds fine to me, and perfectly in keeping with the character
saying it. And who cares about everyday parlance, anyway? You can
here everyday parlance every day: Writers are supposed to rise above
everyday parlance.
