Is this some pompous editors correction? Is that how both the US and
UK editions printed it? Surely the more easy colloquial expression is
"stench ... in the air" and not "upon the air". What do you think is
the most likely usage that you would use in everyday parlance?

OF the possible changes - it is most likely that THAT is how JKR wrote it. The word UPON is spelled correctly - and the meaning is clear anyway - so it is unlikely an editor would change that. They are looking for things that are WRONG.
