It's not true, though everybody seems to believe it. It seems that back in the 1980s someone noticed that the number of marriages in that year was twice the number of divorces, and concluded that half of all marriages ended in divorce. But all that ratio reflected was that the majority of Baby Boomers who were likely to marry had already done so, whereas a lot of GenXers hadn't yet married.

The divorce rate has been declining in the last couple decades, and I think current estimates are that one-third of marriages will end in divorce.

But at the same time - lots more people are living together without marriage - than ever before.
