As I am German and don´t know who Rush Limbaugh is nor what he means
by "phony soldiers" I´d be rather gratefull if someone could tell me.

Rush Limbaugh is a very well-known extreme right-wing radio talk show
host in the US with an ego the size of Mt. McKinley. He routinely
insults, ridicules, demonizes and/or questions the patriotism of all
those holding opposing points of view, and he recently called soldiers
who speak out against the war in Iraq phony soldiers, the idea
apparently being that all "real" scolders support the war
enthusiastically and any who do not are something else than real
soldiers no matter how much combat they's seen. Rush himself has
never spent a day in uniform, much less seen combat, which makes what
he said especially offensive.

Thanks for the information. He really seems to be an idiot...

Curious that you should say that. A few years ago a highly political
American comedian named Al Franken wrote a book called "Rush Limbaugh
is a Big Fat Idiot." He wrote two other books about the American
right called "Lying Lies and the Liars who Tell Them" and "The Truth,
with Jokes." In my opinion, he's pretty good at cutting through the
profound mendacity of the right but he has a much too uncritical view
of the other side.

My original post was much longer,

I know, but an answer that did it justice would have to be even longer
as it raises some complex and thorny issues, and even I think we're
getting too far afield from the purposes of this news group,
