Re: Ok, who is the computer whiz here

It is now time for me to upgrade my desktop at home and I have a question.

Is there any real need to get a super whiz bang Graphics card - when I do not use my computer for gaming?

I use it primarily for Business applications - E-mail - and the like. I use a lot of Spreadsheets, some Database applications, occasionally a presentation type thing (Normally these are made to me). I average about 800 e-mails a day (Yup - sometimes even more - but I don't answer all of them).

I would think that a high clocked Core 2 Duo or Quad with lots of RAM would be most important. I doubt I would see the difference between the graphics cards.

Unless you intend to do high level graphics work, a moderately capable graphics card is more than adequate. It is always helpful to remove as much of the graphics overhead from the main processor as possible, but for the applications you mention, the more basic graphics cards are more than adequate. I would spend my money on more RAM, and a better monitor rather than for a fancy graphics card.
When buying a new computer, try to get ALL the specifications for the machine so that you don't get burned as I did by a computer with a fast CPU and HD, and a dog slow USB interface. This kind of thing can happen when you buy a brand-name computer off the shelf. I won't be taken for a similar ride in the future.
