Don't make yourself out to be worse than you are. Following your onion
odyssey, with great interest, I in no way gain the impression that it is
necessarily a phobia or even need have a psychological basis at all. It
might very well be a warning bodily reaction of allergic type or some
other form of metabolic issue for which the basis is simply not yet
known. Were it otherwise, you would probably be able to trace the whole
thing back to a very vivid and specific incident. (My liquidation is in
the mail.)

phobia (irrational fear which interferes with normal functioning) or not.
it's wise for me to avoid them (I can recall an excellent Spanish meal I had
for but was very ill about 40 mins later and it turned out the stock had
been made with onions) and I've always been like that for as long as I can
remember.
Unfortunately I can also remember an incident when I must have been 6 or 7 I
think (though I have almost no memories of my childhood) where my parents,
knowing I hated onions, forced me to eat some mashed potato with onion in
it. I still recall the 3 pieces sliding down my throat - and then projectile
vomiting them back up! That turned a healthy and sensible aversion into a
(relatively mild) phobia - but I'd rather be mildly phobic of something I'm
allergic to than like it despite the bad effects, cos then I'd really miss
being able to eat it :)

puke it up was brussell sprouts. I also had to eat squash on
Thanksgiving which totally ruined the whole meal experience. I dreaded
Thanksgiving for that reason. Always that darned squash.
like squash either, but why would you be forced to eat it?
I know right? I grew up in old school. You had to take a little of
everything and eat it. I wasn't forced to eat a big helping, but at
least a spoonful. I guess maybe because it was the only vegetable? I
don't know but that and if I put my elbow on the table, my dad used to
smack my elbow (making me almost go headfirst into my food). They
were strict on that stuff and coming home late. Just their little
thing I guess. I'd get away with a lot of other stuff but not those!
But I LOVE onions! I think I'll make some peppers and onions later..That kind of thing will only increase his aversion to the food, and
saute them and maybe do up some pepper steak. Yum. Funny how we like
certain things and not others isn't it? I wonder if someone could
hypnotize us to like certain foods... hmm.
For my cousin I remember him sitting at our table and my dad forcing
him to stay there till he ate his split pea soup. Poor kid.
might result in eating disorders later in life. Still, some parents
still do that sort of thing.
Oh yeah; that kid would never eat pea soup (try it again) for the rest
of his life. Unfortunately he died in his 20's in a motorcycle
accident. Another thing I am adamantly against. We've had three
family deaths from motorcycles so... that is one thing in my life
where I get personal feelings into it.
Last time I rode a motorcycle, I laid it down, and we slid under the
back of a truck. I still have a scar on my left leg to remember why I
don't ride them any more.
I quit while I was still able to quit.
And though my cousin was actually wreckless on his (he was chasing his
fiance who was in a car and was speeding I hear; and he hit a
telephone pole face first), the other two deaths were "freak"
accidents. My husband's brother (a year younger) was actually riding
a moped and going less than 35 mph and had a helmet on. He was in
Burmuda which is known for wind... and a gust came up, knocked him off
balance and he slid into a curb. He'd of lived apparantly, but the
helmet cracked! I guess they said every helmet has a weak spot and he
just happened to hit it. He was a 21 year old marine. The other
death was my husband's fourth brother (he has 5 brothers and one
sister). He was in his early 30's. He wasn't drinking, he was just
going around a curve about 25-35 mph (about the speed limit as
witnesses recall) and something happened to the front tire apparently
and he lost control and hit a tree. People saw him die there. I had
a mini bike accident once too (there was no break, you had to hit this
wire to stop and they didn't tell me that till I was already going).
Not much harm done (scrapes etc and a big headache, but it was scary
enough for me). Motorcyles, mopeds, mini-bikes and all that are
dangerous things. Even at low speed!
