Stubbornness in insisting that people adopt SI is inexcusable.
Well I think the original thought was over many years (forget. maybe
10 or something like that) to start measurements in litres etc but
what happened was a lot of companies (makers of food especially) had
equipment which would all need to be modified etc. Some companies
started to convert readily but the bigger manufacturers didn't.
Also, people are set in their ways. They addressed the older people
by doing over many years but the manufacturers I think wouldn't do it.
It'd of been better if they had.
First of all, *using* SI units has nothing to do with *producing*
goods in round unit numbers. There´s no problem at all in selling 454
g of butter or 3.8 L of gasoline, it´s just a question of labelling.
And second, and most important, the debate is far from over, as e.g.
the EU will ban non-SI markings from all imported items from 2009 on.
theoretically no. I was a teen in the 70's when this was a huge
issue. I do remember huge talks about how expensive it was to
incorporate changes to equipment to companies. Can sizes etc. It was
not a cheap process for many of them.
I guess you missed my point, the examples I gave are usual quantities
in the US (1 pound = 454g and 3.8 L = 1 gallon.)
What I meant was you can keep producing the same amounts, just re-
label them. No need to change can sizes at all!
It's the just relabeling them that is costly too. Machines need to be
remarked most likely and the factory workers probably retrained in
math (even if the same, it will most likely cause confusion). I am
not arguing with you here by the way. I am just telling you what I
remembered being argued back then. I personally wish everything was
standardized as I have most problems with my hobby. I have to
purchase stamps from other countries and by doing so, I need a
gram/ounce converter, I need a currency converter and I need a chart
listing what I can buy. Plus I run a website where people continually
ask me how to buy stamps from other countries and I need to explain
conversion to them.
Oh, sorry! I really didn´t think the relabelling was that costly. The
retraining I agree is probably a costly factor, and I´m glad you like
standards! :)
LOL I got into an argument with my son the other day over a measuring
cup I have where I accidentally bought it in metric. He saw me
filling to a certain line and was chastising me for not measuring
properly lest his brownies come out sucking big time. I asserted a
water measurement up to that line was only VERY slightly off and would
make no difference (I've been cooking long enough to know what will
and what won't most times). I literally dumped the water out, took
out a different cup and handed it to him and said YOU make the
brownies then. I think next time he'll shut up. but in the meantime,
my life would be slightly enhanced by one system!
Nice lesson for him... :)
