to control the appetite.
True! Genetic & hormonal conditions can usually be treated very
successfuly with medication. Most people are overweight because
they overeat in relation to the amount of physical activity they do.
The simple mathmatics is, if your calorie intake is more than your
calorie expenditure, you're going to gain weight!
I don't count calories, but here's an idea of the way I eat every day:
I'll start with 3 or 4 egg McMuffins or similar (I'm ALWAYS running
late in the morning & don't have time to cook) Lunch will be
something like a large hero sandwich, or a big Chineese take-out
lunch. Dinner will be something like a couple of large steaks, or half a
dozen pork chops, or a huge plate of spagettie with sausage & meat
sauce. Wash that all down with a 2 liter bottle of soda or two (non diet).
And that's not to mention snacks...... I'm 48, 6' tall & currently weigh
167lbs. Why do I stay so thin when I eat so much? Its got nothing to
do with genetics or hormones. I've got a very physicaly demanding
job. I also lead a very active lifestyle when I'm not working. If I slow
down, I have to remember to eat less, or yes, I do gain alot of weight.
You can count carbs & do all that other crazy stuff, but the only safe,
proven method of permanent weight loss is the "get off your ass & get
active" method.
Some of us aren't physically able to 'get active'. I can walk about .25
mile before the pain becomes too much. I try to do that at least 3
times a week, and manage to go to the 'big box' stores a couple of times
a week, and walk around. That is about all I can manage. So, it is a
matter of controlling my calorie intake. Add diabetes to that
situation, and both losing weight (started at 265 and now 232) is quite
a challenge. My wife who started at the same weight is about 10 lbs.
ahead of me, but then she walks about 30-45 minutes a day, and goes to
an exercise place (Curves) three times a week. With the diabetes as a
motivator, I will get my weight down, slowly, as I certainly don't need
any further deterioration of my physical condition.
I understand completely. I've known quite a few people, of all ages, who
had weight problems due to an physicaly limiting injury, or other
mobility problems. Have you tried swimming or aquatic excercise? It
can be extremely effective if you have mobility issues. You can actually
burn ALOT of calories, without pain as the water supports your body,
and helps eliminate many of the stresses on it. Many people I've known
have found they can manage a really good workout without pain in the
water. They've also found they've regained a range of movement they
thought was gone forever. It sounds like you and your wife have some
pretty serious mobility issues, so I'd suggest finding an aquatic
excercise class to start off with, if you can. If not, I think you'll find that
even just doing some slow, easy swimming around a pool for an hour or
so 2-3 times a week, will have some amazingly positive results. There's
also an excellent chance that if you get your doctor to reccomend this
kind of excercise for you, that your insurance will cover the cost of a
pool membership, or aquatic excercise classes.
Oh, there's also a book called "The Arthritic's Cookbook" which I highly
reccomend, even if your particular condition isn't athritis related. My
father was practicly crippled with arthritis, and conventional treatment
wasn't helping a bit. He tried the book out of desperation and was
amazed to find it not only vastly improved his condition, but he lost
the excess weight much more easily. It may not help in your case, but
what the heck, it couldn't hurt! Good luck!
