twist that i can't swallow easily.
They weren't in the same room, but in a big forest clearing, if that
matters.
Well, Snape does so frequently. Draco demonstrates some mastery of
occlumency as well (it's mentioned that Bellatrix taught him). I
believe Regulus Black did as well. So there is precident that people
CAN lie to him successfully.
There is NOTHING in the text to suggest that Lord V., can inherently
tell if somone is lying, unless he is *attempting* legilimency against
them. Just being in their presence isn't good enough. Just because
*he* says he can always tell if someone is lying, doesn't make it so.
It's also been established that looking into someone eyes is
necessary, or at least helpful in telling if someone is lying - so
Lord V., has just been knocked out, orders someone to check on the
kid, and wasn't looking into her eyes.
