Any Americans order from Amazon.co.uk? Check your bill if you
did. I was charged VAT, which I shouldn't have been. It was more
than the book!
VAT isn't and hasn't EVER been charged on ANY books in the UK. You
might have been charged VAT on the postage and packing but that is
all.
No, I was charged. More than the actual book cost. I contacted
Amazon for a reversal of those charges. I expect it's just a
mistake. by Saint Isidore of Seville
Just out of curiosity, what is VAT??
It's like an outrageous sales tax that applies within the European
Union. It can be, as in my case, more the the item you're buying.
http://www.dyerpartnership.com/vat.html
In the UK:
17.5% maximum on a item. Food, baby stuff, books etc. no
VAT. Electricity, certain womens essentials etc, 5%.
VAT should never be more than the item purchased as it is a %
of the cost of that item.
Julie
They charged me 9.97 (UK pounds) VAT for a book that costs 8.99 (UK pounds). I'm sure it's just an error, but I hope I don't have to waste an international phone call to get it straight... :(
Just how much postage did they charge?
9.97 tax on an item costing 8.99 before tax is a rate of 210%, even
pure alcohol or fuel isn't taxed at anything like that rate.
The highest VAT rate on ANYTHING in the UK is 17.5%, on some things it
is 5% and on many things like books it is zero or "exempt" (the two
essentially being the same thing but it's a legal muddle)
The only conclusion is you are quite clearly reading your invoice
wrong.
I recently bought two books from amazon.com, they came to USD36 but it
cost me another USD30 for postage to the UK. I wasn't charged any US
sales tax.
I wasn't charged any VAT or import duty as:
BOOKS IN SOLD IN THE UK
or BOOKS IMPORTED INTO THE UK
or BOOK EXPORTED ELSEWHERE FROM THE UK
DO NOT ATTRACT ANY:
VAT, DUTY, SALES TAX OR ANY OTHER TAX.
Other corrupt warmongering money grabbing governments may however tax
the written word. :)
My bill from Amazon.co.uk is 8.99 plus 4.99 shipping and handling, plus a VAT charge of 9.97 (all in pounds, of course) It is obviously a mistake, but that is what I have been charged. I spoke to US Amazon (a toll free number) and they said I should not have been charged the 9.97, but Amazon.co.uk has to credit the charge. So, I just have to wait for them to respond.
