Major part? As I recall, they've exchanged all of 10 sentences in the books, if that. She's been tacked on as surely as Eeyore's tail.

At first years, probably they didn't have a relationship except Ron's friend/Ron's little sister. A simple "hi, Ginny", "bye, Ginny". Mostly because Ginny was terrified about talking to him and Harry not seeing her as someone too important (despited the fact that he was probably fond of her as being his mate's little sister). Eventually, Ginny became most secure about herself and she didn't mind to talk to a Harry who saw her like a sister too while they lived together at the Burrow and Grimmauld Place. Remember that Ginny was who helped Harry in OotP (but I don't remember how!!!: the chocolate episode!)

Then they started dating. They talked: even Harry indicated the spent at least one memorable evening at the lake. And I am sure he didn't only mean the snogging.
Yes, but how much dialogue was in the books? I don't have the books here in front of me, and I haven't read them since each individual release, but I don't recall much dialogue between the two (or words spoken by Ginny in general). You allude to a similar experience with the help given by Ginny in OotP: we remember she was there, but we don't remember what she did (or said). If that's not indicative of a character being tacked on, I don't know what is.

NOt according to the author, but what does she know, compared with someone who has read the books ONCE?
So your experience is different than mine? Or are you just going to take Jo's word for it and ignore the fact that NOTHING Ginny does, other than kiss Harry, stands out too terribly? Maybe book 7 will be different, but thus far, I see what I see.

So you say. You've given little evidence to support your position.

I thought that Ginny was quite ignored in one of the books (Don't recall which at the moment), so I went through it and found that she was frequently around, and often contributed more the conversations than I had thought.
Doesn't make her a major character--consider that most of what she says could be said by anyone. Give me one example of anything significant she's done other than kiss Harry (and be possessed by Tom Riddle in CoS). Best yet, do it from memory--one could undoubtedly comb through the books and say, there she is, and there she is again, but she's done little to make her stand out from the rest of the crowd. I'm not opposed to the Ginny & Harry thing, I like it, but to say she's a major character is a pretty big stretch. Even in CoS, she doesn't figure largely. It's Harry, and the diary and the weird things happening and good old Gilderoy Lockhart--thus far she's been little more than a literary device.

Recall the scene when they are discussing whether or not Voldemort may be trying to posses Harry, and Ginny tells them to ask someone he HAS possessed? You don't find that a contribution.


I expect her to be not only important to book 7, but pivotal.
I expect her to have a larger part in book 7, too, but that's not what we're talking about. Further, if she is pivotal, it'll be a big break from the books thus far.

Sounds like sour grapes from a disgruntled HP/HR shipper to me. Deal with it, Ginny is the key to the whole story.


I'll just conclude by saying, I have an MA in Literature, and I know a "major character" when I see one. Hell, in this series, Ron and Hermione barely qualify. Thanks Ron. It's been fun.

Perhaps you have studied it too much to be able to ENJOY it. Reading tons of books you didn't want to read, and didn't enjoy, could well do that to you. I recall reading several in Lit. classes I regretted ever picking up, such as 'The Stranger'. Remember that unlike 99% of the books you read for a Literature class, the Harry Potter books are a SERIES, and the ending has not be published yet, so you don't know what is going to be important in the end.
Most of what is studied in Literature classes has been read, and reread over at least a decade before teachers will even assign it for classwork. Very often the works are pretty well picked to pieces by the time you read them, and opinions of others tend to swamp the process of enjoying them. There is a vast difference between reading a book for 'work', and for pleasure.
