11 years to power. 13 years to repower. 3 years to final defeat. Do
those numbers mean anything?

Is it possible that it was his visit to Dumbledore to request the post
of DADA teacher that was the catalyst for this power surge??

That was my theory. Teaching at Hogwarts was his Rosebud. By being
denied it, he decided to go through with his world domination plans.
Had he been given the post, there'd be no Dark Lord, and kids would
look forward to class with Uncle Tom.


I don't see it quite like that - Dd says he didn't think Tom seriously expected to get a job teaching at Hogwarts. I suspect that instead he used the refusal as an excuse for being anti-Dd, even though he was already about as anti as you could get. So to Tom, that refusal may have retrospectively legitimised his stance rather than being the cause of it.
