I wonder why Ron didn't mention Luna to Harry before OoP? Come to
that he didn't mention the Diggory's either though we know from
GoF that both Cedric, Luna *and the Weasley's lived fairly near
each other.

Lived, but never associated. I used to live near Regis Philben as
a baby, but he never babysat me. Probably never so much as saw me
in a stroller.

You'd think with so few wizarding families being around an area
they might be expected to be more sociable?? Maybe??

No more than Muggles don't.

This particular argument is a bad one, because it assumes that Wizards
are as numerous as Muggles, which is clearly not the case. I would
imagine that the number of Muggles living in the vicinity of yourself
and Regis Philben dwarfs the entire Wizard population of Britain, and
may even dwarf the World wizarding population.

A better explanation might be that Wizards have enormous mobility, and
can therefore choose their friends from all over Britain, traveling by
Floo Network, etc.

Kids are slightly less mobile, but seemingly can still use the floo
network. Ron would likely have little interest in being friends with
Diggory (a boy 3 years older), or Luna (a girl 1 year younger).

There is therefore no need to assume he would mention them. If Ron
did happen to mention them at some point, there is no reason to assume
Harry would remember the mention, or JKR would see the point of
recording the detail in her book before it had any plot significance.
