Actually, there is proof. In PS, DD shows up at Privet Drive, sees cat,
sits next to cat, looks where the cat is but cat is gone, replaced by
McGonnagall. Seems pretty obvious to me that she was the cat and
transformed to her human form without a wand.
The test is the ability to assume animal form at will. It is
irrelevant that a transformation or illusion spell, cast via wand,
potion or device, can be designed to be cancelled at will.
BTW, we cannot be sure that this is a transfiguration at all. It
might merely be an illusion (which I suppose is a type of charm).
There were owls flying all over the place that day.
None had business in Durseley's neighborhood, which has a wizard
population of zero.
To me, there are two
possibilities for an owl landing at the Dursleys. First, an owl was sent to
check out the house to make sure that Petuna still lives there (probable but
not likely), [...]
Wrong. None of the Dursley's noticed the owl. If it had brought
Petunia a message, she would have noticed. Nor would she have had a
pleasant day spying on neighbors. She would have been upset.
[...] or that JKR was just taking creative artistic license (most
likely) to reinforce the fact that owls were acting really strange and
flying all over the place -- so much so that the muggle news even took
notice.
Ah. The eternal question. Is it a mistake? Or is it a clue, from
which she later distracts us with a red herring explanation? By
calling on "artistic license" you already concede that my explanation
works better than yours.
But we know that, at this point, she is not a *registered* cat
animagus.
We don't know that, in fact it makes sense that she is registered as a cat
because if she wasn't, I'm fairly sure JKR thru Hermione would have
mentioned it.
And yet, you cannot deny that Hermione did not mention it. Please
explain why she would have mentioned it if she were an owl, but not
mentioned it if she were a cat.
If she were registered, she would *expect* Dumbledore to
know her by her (very distinctive) markings. But she does not expect
this.
True, she didn't expect DD to recognize her, but that doesn't mean she
wasn't registered as a cat.
Logically, it should mean that.
It is likely that she never changed into a cat
with DD around and thought that he didn't know.
She has been his soldier, in the fight against Voldemort, for the last
11 years, and never bothered to tell him about this special power she
has? Already, that is suspicious. Not very loyal is she? Doesn't
care very much about defeating Voldemort, does she?
Also, how can she think a former Transfiguration professor would not
know about the six registered animagi in the world.
She was therefore was
surprised when DD recognized her the moment he laid eyes on her at the
Dursleys house.
Logically, she should not have been surprised. Which brings us to the
eternal question. Mistake? Or Clue?
I doubt she was trying to fool DD. Though she was a bit surprised that DD
recognized her so easily, it didn't really bother her in the least, and they
quickly started talking about other stuff to fill the reader in on what was
going on in the wizarding world -- which was the whole point of the chapter.
She was definitely trying to fool DD and it definitely bothered her to
be caught (I believe "ruffled" is the word Rowling used, IIRC). This
is true even if you assume she is loyal, and DD merely caught her at a
joke, in which case she was only bothered a little.
She is registered as a cat. There is no good evidence to suggest anything
else. I also doubt she's evil -- though I will admit she's a miserable old
bat. And if I'm wrong and in DH, she is shown to be a Voldy supporter and
spy, feel free to mock me.
Certainly!
She showed Harry's hole class her cat animogy transformation in book three. And
has said that you only get one form.
In WTTA it says that wizards and witches that are transformed by other means then
the animogy transformation get the brain of the new form and forget where they
were going.
That is why Krum only did a partal transformation. If he went all the way he
would of had the mind of a shark as well.
