Re: DD lessons for Harry: sympathy for Riddle

Hmmm, you know, I never thought about this twist to the prophesy...

In Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore is teaching Harry about the life of Tom
Riddle, presumably so they may discover where the horcruxes are buried.
But what if there's another reason?

I don't remember if Dumbledore comes right out and says it, but one
reason would be for Harry to discover a way to defeat Voldemort through
what he learns in the pensieve. Or, so that Harry might develop some
sympathy for Tom Riddle.

Supposing for a moment that Riddle and Voldemort are two separate
personalities, is it possible the prophesy from Order of the Phoenix
relates to all three of them; Harry Potter, Tom Riddle, and Lord
Voldemort?

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... Born
to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month
dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will
have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the
hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...
The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the
seventh month dies..."

Is it possible Rowling is preparing us for Harry's ability to defeat
Lord Voldemort without necessarily killing Tom Riddle? I assume the
ministry knows Tom Riddle is who became Lord Voldemort. Why wasn't it
Tom's name on the prophesy instead of his moniker? Is it possible that
Harry's power will be to separate one from the other? The absence of
love in Riddle's childhood eventually became a vacuum that created Lord
Voldemort, but before he was Lord Voldemort he was Tom Riddle. It may
be that Harry doesn't need to kill anyone--he just needs to defeat hate
(in spectacular fashion, of course) and in doing so is able to vanquish
the Dark Lord.

I know, I know. It sounds like all Voldemort needs is a big squishy hug
and he'll cast down the dark force and die redeemed as Anakin
Skywalker. But there may be more to Dumbledore's "Tom Riddle--This is
YOUR LIFE!" private lessons for Harry than just finding clues to the
horcruxes. Dumbledore is counting on Harry's love as his strongest
weapon. Perhaps Lord Voldemort can be vanquished without killing him.
