Based on another thread between Ron Hunter's rigid prophecy
interpretation, and others more relaxed (maybe too relaxed) one there
is two things that need to be remembered.
1. Her prophecy is correct English, therefore we can't go making up
meanings that aren't correct English.
2. English does allow for some ambiguity, and knowing Rowling, she may
go for the less obvious interpretation while still using English that
is technically correct.
The prophecy is clearly about The Dark Lord and the Marked One with
the power to Vanquish the DL. Voldemort is clearly the DL, and Harry
is clearly the one he has marked. The most straightforward
interpretation of the prophecy implies a relationship including only
these two character, one must kill the other in order to truly live,
whatever that means.
Also, quite clearly, neither are living a proper life at this time.
So, we already have something to wonder about, even with this most
straightforward interpretation, namely, what is this condition of
being truly alive? Does it have anything to do with being immortal?
After all, if you believe in an afterlife that is just as real as this
one, then you are effectively immortal, and can live without fearing
death.
Now, if we can relax our interpretaion of the prophecy while still
requiring correct English. At the time of the prophecy, it concerned
not just the Dark Lord and the Chosen One, since no one had yet been
marked, it concerned an entire pool of candidates who met the
qualification of having parents who thrice defied the DL and were born
towards the end of the seventh month. The story has revealed that
this includes Neville, but does it include anyone else? Rowling has
been posting Happy Birthdays to many characters on her website for
years now. Who else was born in late July? Must it even be the same
year as Harry and Neville? Might it be a Weasley? Must they have
been unborn at the time of the prophecy? So, up until the attack on
the Potters at GH, we have a candidate group of at least two people.
And, it would be correct to say that the prophecy refers to all of
them, not just the candidate to be chosen later. Hence, the prophecy
refers to the Dark Lord, the Chosen, Marked One, and the other(s). It
would not be technically incorrect for the other(s) to be someone
other than Harry or Voldemort. QED.
I have shown that the prophecy could correctly refer to quite a large
group. Fortunately, Rowling has told us that we have enough clues to
know, if only we could distinguish them form the red herrings. Dang,
where is that hungry walrus when we need him. Therefore, we have in
all liklihood, met the other(s).
Dumbledore told Harry that only he and Neville fit the requirements. I
would assume that his research was through, and given the requirement of
the candidate's parents having had to defy Voldemort three times, the
pool would be quite small.
Should we use the interpretation of DL, Harry, and 'the other', then
Neville is 'the other'. Waiting until the final book to introduce yet
another character who could be 'the other' wouldn't be quite playing fair.
Yes, it would be a bit of a cheat to introduce a new character, or
even discover that Dudley was actually Harry's twin brother who was
hiding under the invisibility cloak when Voldy attacked. The twist
can't be too much.
So, we have two valid interpretations of that part of teh phophey. 1.
Neither Harry or Voldy can live while both Harry and Voldy survive 2.
Neither H and V and live while Neville survives.
Question: Why use live in one place and survive in another?
Note: This doesn't indicate that Neville must participate in the
battle. If he is the other, maybe he simply has to be killed if
either Harry or Voldemort want a life. Or, Harry might realize that
his real task is simply to protect Neville, so that Voldemort won's
live. Of course, this means that Harry must sacrifice himself, as
well.
