While at a store the other day I noticed a rack of books dedicated to the
series by Madeleine L'Engle that began with "A Wrinkle in Time."
The first one came out in 1962, the second in 1973, the third in 1978, and
the fourth in 1986.
L'Engle was working and publishing other works (including related ones) at
the time. And I haven't read them yet, but the series doesn't seem to
have been originally conceived as a single story in multiple volumes.
But if JKR were working as swiftly on the HP series as L'Engle did on the
Wrinkle in Time, we would still be waiting for book two!

Or it could be Jean Ayul and her Children of Earth series.
Clan of the Cave Bear - Sept 1980
Valley of the Hourse - Sept 1982
Manmouth Hunters - Fall 1985
Planes of Passage - Nov 1990
Shelters of Stone - Apr 2002, and it wasn't worth the wait
She is supposed to do a sixth and final book, I am estimating sometime in
2018.
I am really glad that Jo didn't take that long (but I am getting a little
antsy waiting for the next one, 54 days is too long to wait :-)- Hide quoted text -

LOL... and the "Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan I purchased in
1997(ish) thinking I was buying the completed series of 6 book is now
up 11 with the 12th due whenever it is going to be done, and I keep
hearing the next book is the last... I get the feeling each time I
read a book that this one will complete it and I get to the end only
to be thinking that it was all kind of interesting but will they
*ever* fight the final battle in this age?
I am so happy to know that there will be 7 books and that will be it.
The story *will* have an ending and hopefully many questions answered
for us... I am also glad to have something to look forward to. Too
often we are an impatient society and have to have everything right
now, it is nice to know there is light at the end of the tunnel, but
the waiting only makes the book better in the end (I hope)...
