While at a store the other day I noticed a rack of books dedicated to the
series by Madeleine L'Engle that began with "A Wrinkle in Time."
The first one came out in 1962, the second in 1973, the third in 1978, and
the fourth in 1986.
L'Engle was working and publishing other works (including related ones) at
the time. And I haven't read them yet, but the series doesn't seem to
have been originally conceived as a single story in multiple volumes.
But if JKR were working as swiftly on the HP series as L'Engle did on the
Wrinkle in Time, we would still be waiting for book two!

Or it could be Jean Ayul and her Children of Earth series.
Clan of the Cave Bear - Sept 1980
Valley of the Hourse - Sept 1982
Manmouth Hunters - Fall 1985
Planes of Passage - Nov 1990
Shelters of Stone - Apr 2002, and it wasn't worth the wait
She is supposed to do a sixth and final book, I am estimating sometime in
2018.
I got a little sick of her hero inventing just about every human development of prehistory. Sheesh.
.
I am really glad that Jo didn't take that long (but I am getting a little
antsy waiting for the next one, 54 days is too long to wait :-)
