You would think that the Godric's Hollow fiasco would have made him
realize there was something to Dumbledore's ideas, after all. But he

that almost destroyed him...
When you are so against something (that you can't even say, well, I
suppose maybe, if. . .), you can't see how it can be true, even when
faced with evidence that it is true, and you're wrong. Voldemort is
so against love, he can't understand it having any power, even when it
spares his victim and nearly kills him. He can't understand a
parents' love, how they're willing to sacrifice themselves so their
child can live. All he can see is death and avoiding it. If someone
else must die so you can live, yay!
That orphanage really screwed him up, as did knowing Merope didn't
even try to fight to live, and Daddy Dearest abandoning him before
birth. Having no love, he can't understand it. Imagine going back to
when you were a little kid, and explaining the Internet to yourself.
Your younger self will not understand it.
Try telling an Pilgrims about walking on the moon. You'll be tried as
a witch.
Whn all you know is one way, you assume it is the only way, and all
people therefore react the same way. Death is so frightening to
people, that avoidance becomes an obsession, one everybody shares. So
of course if given the choice between living without a son, or dead
failing to protect him, you'd chose to live. It's all Voldemort
knows. Live at all costs. So, everybody must be that was, or their
foolish, silly little things. So, who cares if they die.
