You know, in the movie, I thought he looked a little evaisive when he
answered that...I kept expecting that it would turn out that he was up
something...
I don´t think the movies give more clues than the books.
True, but I seem to recall he sounded a bit evasive in the book too.
Or else Lockherat would be the HBP after the obvious clue on his badge
nobody could possibly see unless they zoomed in on the DVD. Despite
the fact JK had noting to do with the wardrobe department outside of
general approval. LOL.
But it seemed
to me in the book that he was trying to find an excuse. If he had just
been searching for a slugrepellant I am sure he would have found
something effective in Diagon Alley, too. Slugs are quite common
creatures and they don´t only feed on Hagrid´s cabbage! If he had been
looking for food for forbidden creatures he gives home to in his
cottage this could possibly be. But wouldn´t we have come across this
creature then? And then: What can a forbidden creature possibly live
on: so far we have come across a lot of flesheating pets ( Aragog,
Norbert, the screwts, Fluffy) - and flesh is not the thing Hagrid
needs to buy in Knockturn alley. So what was he looking for? Or was he
just strolling around hoping to find something interesting?
Probably trying to buy deadly creatures. Blast Ended Skewerts,
perhaps?
In GoF it's said he bred them himself, breaking the decree against
interbreeding dangerous magical species or similar.
